Patch testing services in Dorchester

Patch testing is a highly effective diagnostic method used to identify specific substances (allergens) that may be triggering allergic skin reactions such as eczema, dermatitis or contact allergies. It’s safe and evidence-based test performed under clinical supervision, typically over 48-72 hours, with results interpreted by a skin specialist.

At The Melbury Skin Clinic, our consultant-led team uses patch testing to provide a deeper understanding of your skin condition, helping to tailor personalised treatments that address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Who is Patch Testing For?

Patch testing is recommended if you experience:

  • Recurrent or chronic dermatitis – Especially when affecting the hands, face or other exposed areas.
  • Suspected contact allergy – Reaction after exposure to personal care products, metals, fragrances or latex.
  • Unexplained flare-ups – Where standard treatment haven’t provided long-term relief.
  • Occupational skin reactions – For those regularly exposed to chemicals, soaps or dyes at work.

What to expect

How does Patch Testing Work?

  1. Consultation – You’ll first meet our dermatologist to assess your symptoms, medical history and exposure risks.
  2. Application of allergen panels – Small amounts of allergens (usually 20-70 substances) are applied to patches placed on your back.
  3. Observation period – Patches remain on the skin for 48 hours. You will return to the clinic for readings.
  4. Expert Analysis – Results are interpreted by our dermatologist to identify which substances triggered a reaction.
  5. Tailored Care Plan – Based on the findings, we develop a management strategy and provide avoidance guidance.

Not at all. The test involves no needles and is generally painless. Milt itching or irritation may occur on positive reaction sites.

Initial results are visible within 48-72 hours, but sometimes a delayed reaction may require a follow-up reading after 5-7 days.

In most cases, topical steroids and antihistamines should be stopped before testing. Our consultant will give you specific guidance during the consultation.

You will be advised to keep the area dry and avoid excessive sweating during the test period.

It’s possible. Our dermatologist will help prioritise the most relevant allergens and provide practical strategies to manage your exposure.
