Understanding Your Skin

What are moles?

Moles are clusters of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. They often appear as brown, black or flesh-toned spots on the skin and can be flat or raised. Most moles are harmless, but changes in size, shape, colour or texture can be an early warning sign of skin cancer.

Types of Moles

  • Common (Acquired) Moles – Usually small, round or oval and uniform in colour. Most appear in childhood or early adulthood.
  • Atypical (Dysplastic) Moles – Larger, irregular shaped and may have uneven colouring. These carry a slightly higher risk of developing into melanoma.
  • Congenital Moles – Present at birth, these vary in size and may carry an increased risk depending on their characteristics.
  • Halo Moles – Moles surrounded by a lighter ring or ‘halo’ caused by immune activity. Typically benign, but should be monitored.
