A non-invasive, Well-tolerated Option

Expert Daylight Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in Dorchester

Harnessing the power of natural daylight, Daylight Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a gentle and effective treatment primarily used for certain types of non-melanoma skin cancer and actinic keratoses (sun damaged, pre-cancerous lesions). Delivered under the care of our experienced consultant dermatologists, this treatment provides excellent cosmetic outcomes with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Understanding Daylight Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

What is Daylight Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

Daylight PDT involves the application of a light-sensitive cream (photosensitiser) to the affected skin, which is then naturally activated by exposure to daylight. The interaction between the cream and natural light triggers a targeted response that selectively destroys abnormal or pre-cancerous cells.

Unlike traditional PDT that uses artificial light sources, daylight PDT offers a more comfortable experience, often requiring no anaesthesia and causing significantly less stinging or irritation. It is particularly suitable for patients with multiple superficial lesions, especially on the face, scalp or limbs.

Who is it suitable for

What conditions can daylight PDT Treat?

Our Consultant Dermatologists recommend daylight PDT for suitable cases such as:

  • Actinic Keratoses – Sun-induced skin damage that may progress to skin cancer if left untreated.
  • Field Cancerisation – Area of widespread sun damage containing multiple abnormal cells.
  • Thin, Superficial Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCC) – In selected low-risk cases.
  • Immunosuppressed Patients – Who may develop multiple actinic keratoses and benefit from gentle treatment.

Daylight PDT is not typically used for deep or thick skin cancers but may be recommended by our consultant for carefully selected cases.
